キャサリン・バーンズ 博士, 学振外国人特別研究員
Dr. Catherine E. Burns , JSPS Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Short term)
I undertook my BSc and Integrated Masters at the University of Leeds (UK) and at the University of Alberta (Canada) jointly. I then went on to complete my PhD in the Fluvial Research Group (FRG) at the University of Leeds (UK). During my PhD my research focussed on investigating fluvial overbank successions in the stratigraphic record: quantifying overbank deposits and subsequently developing predictive models. Techniques used included facies and architectural-element analysis of three different formations outcropping across Utah and Colorado (USA). The formations studied were the Jurassic-age Morrison Formation, the Campanian-age Castlegate Sandstone and Campanian-age Neslen Formation.
During my PhD I also briefly worked as field assistant for Manchester University in the Karoo (South Africa), looking at deep-water submarine fans and deltaic deposits. I also aided in teaching field classes looking at rocks across UK. I had the opportunity to visit fluvio-deltaic sediments in Northern England and deep-water to deltaic sediments in Western Ireland.
I now have joined Estuary Research Center of Shimane University from the 15th January 2018 for one year as a JSPS funded Postdoc (short-term). My current research will focus on understanding deposits formed from floods: their sedimentary characteristics, geomorphic expression, and timescales of deposition and preservation.
