【講演概要】
Policies aiming to set targets, to reflect and achieve community aspired goals,
require guidance and support of evidence. When these changes move faster than available data and science, evidence become insufficient to confidently support decisions. Environmental management require continuous review of the situation. Freshwater models are already a central to this challenge.
New Zealand freshwater quality has declined due to agricultural intensifications.The government implemented a freshwater management principle called Te Manao te Wai reflecting indigenous values. The principle makes the health and wellbeing of freshwater above human needs. The central and local governments are required to set national bottom-lines, location specific targets, and catchment management plans, all based on this principle.
Due to the fast-paced changes in policy, available data are insufficient to conclusively support many of such decisions. Demands on water quality models will continue to increase, as well as their expectations and responsibilities. How should we improve our modelling practices to maintain their ‘fit-for-purpose’ status?
